Echo-Hawk
& Lieberman
PAINTED INDIANS
A Collaboration
Museum der Weltkulturen
Museum of World Culture
Frankfurt am Main
Germany
May 12 – August 31, 2004
This exhibition which is hung on the outside
of the museum represents a collaboration between painter Bunky
Echo-Hawk and photographer Thorney Lieberman. In this collaboration
Indians bodies, along with a background, are painted and then
photographed. It is necessary to photograph this resulting painting,
as the painting on a human body is transient. However, photography
is employed not merely as a document, but allows further elaboration
of the image, often resulting in a confounding of the picture
plane, that is, creation of an ambiguity of foreground and background.
We have had the unusual opportunity to display
this work on the exterior of the building, utilizing the windows
as frames for our work. We are showing not only the collaborative
works, but also Bunky’s paintings and Thorney’s photographs
which we hope will make the genesis of the collaboration more
apparent.
