The People

This project is intended as a unique photographic survey of Native Americans at the turn of the millennium.  The crux of the work is my life-size, full-body, photography of Native American men, women, and children in indigenous regalia.  Artistically, I hope to surpass the depth of intimacy and detail available in extant photographic portraiture.  Socially and culturally, I hope to provide a vast documentation of the diversity, the dignity and sheer beauty of contemporary Native Americans and their historically referential aesthetics.

America is fascinated by The People native to this land, and has consistently sought their images, even prior to the availability of photography.  However, our unfortunate shared history is one of frequent abuse of those images, of cultural distortion and exploitation. It is hoped that this project can break some new ground by crafting a collaboration where there has been little or none.  Indian people guide this project, work on it, direct their own appearances within it, and would share in any practical benefits from the project.  These people have names, which are referenced for respect and as an attempt to promote future practices.  We are taking steps in a better direction by bringing new respect and ethical awareness to an old relationship - the relationship existing between subject and photographer, Indian and non-Indian.

For each individual person, their image is comprised of as many as forty contact prints of 8x10 inch film.  The image on each piece of film is shot 1:1, or life-size.  These contact prints are then assembled to produce a full-size portrait.
