The Ranch and the Farm were two projects commissioned in Colorado, each to be photographed for a year. The Ranch was photographed throughout all four seasons and the Farm from early spring through the harvest in late fall. The Farm was photographed first and came as a shock to someone who, up until that time, had only been commissioned to photograph architecture; I was confronted by having to photograph the absence of an object, from my point of view.
I was reminded of my first experience listening to Thelonious Monk’s music; it was explained that the silences between the notes were as important as the notes themselves. So it was, I learned, with landscape photography.
This training was invaluable; I went on to do work commissioned by several leading landscape architecture firms in Colorado.
